The title of this painting was always there while I was painting it, but I didn't know that. When I was finished and was able to give myself some distance I saw that these solid earthen ware vessels were posed as sentinels on a border. It intrigued me when I set about this composition of often I see portraits in inanimate objects. To me each vessel has its purpose and its own duty.
